I was awarded a study Fulbright Award for the year 1987/1988 in Denmark. The focus of my research was the Danish painter Wilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916). I was affiliated with the Institut for Kunst Historie in Copenhagen, but more importantly, was able to work with the preeminent scholar on this artist, Poul Vad. We had many meetings in the museums discussing Hammershøi’s work as well as connected me with private collectors who owned work by this artist. Along with the research I also set up a studio in Copenhagen and made paintings that were influence by Hammershøi and the unique light and spaces of Denmark. Upon shipping the four paintings that I made during that year two were damaged from the transit. One was restored and sold and one was beyond repair. The experience of living and working in Denmark was a life altering era of my life.
